Grand Walkabout

Got a GPS? You can help send four GWA hiking boot “travel bugs,” like the one shown here, on a trip around the world.

Unbeknownst to many of us, there are numerous hidden caches containing all kinds of neat “swag” hidden along our trails and in other locations on all seven continents. Geocachers use GPSs to find these caches from which they pick up and drop off “travel bugs.” Hitchhiking in backpacks and pockets, these travel bugs make their way from cache to cache around the world, while their finders record their discoveries and drop-offs online. What you need to join the fun and look for them is a GPS, ability to use it, energy, and a lot of curiosity. To see how it’s done, check out www.geocaching.com.

While you are there, you can sign up and start locating caches on trails near you.

Grand Walkabout placed one travel bug, like the one pictured, in a cache in each county -Dutchess, Ulster, Orange and Putnam – with the hope that these little boots, unlike Henry Hudson, would eventually find their way around the world in the backpacks of hikers.
